CHAPTER 16

MILES

Jess stands up and spits my come into the kitchen sink. I pull my jeans up and rest my elbows on my legs before covering my face with my hands.

What the fuck did I just do?

One minute we were sitting across from each other at the table, talking about how Jess wants to move back to London, and the next minute she was on her hands and knees in front of me. I should have stopped her and pushed her away.

But I didn’t.

What’s worse is Hailey saw all of it, and I came almost the second I saw her. To say I was thinking about her the whole time makes me sound like the biggest asshole, but she’s all I think about, and my body has been aching for some release.

Asshole.

When I woke up in the middle of the night with Hailey on top of me, I thought she was there because she couldn’t fight it anymore, either. She straddled me, and it took all the internal strength I had not to flip her over and explore every inch of her body.

But Hailey wasn’t there for that.

She was there because of the nightmares I was having about the day Lucy and my mom died.

She cared enough to make sure I was okay and stayed with me when I was struggling.

How did I repay her? By falling back into my old patterns and causing pain to the people I care about most.

The headache from my hangover intensifies, and I run to the bathroom to throw up.

“Wow, I was that good, huh?” Jess asks. “Hey, listen, I have to get going. But it was good seeing you again, Miles. Maybe next time you can return the favor.”

My arms shake as I lift my body off the ground. I run my face under the faucet while Jess walks out of the bus. The bathroom mirror reflects my bloodshot eyes, tangled hair, and sweaty forehead.

I rub my eyes and bump against the narrow walls as I walk toward the front door.

The sunlight blinds me when I step off the bus, and I wince before putting my hand up. Jess and her friends pile into her car and drive away. Carter is sitting on a camping chair to my left, scrolling on his phone.

I get dizzy turning around in a circle, but I can’t find Hailey anywhere.

Tourists walking by gasp when they see me. “Is that Miles Ledger?”

They keep walking as they mumble things about my appearance to each other.

“Where’s Hailey?” I ask Carter.

He points to the lookout area on my right, where I find Hailey. Her back is facing us, and she’s with Julian. He talks as they stand beside each other and observe the Grand Canyon.

Julian rubs her back, and I’m about to throw up again.

Kenny wanders over from the gift shop and tosses me a bag of trail mix.

“You look like shit, Miles.”

“Good, I was worried I looked better than I felt.”

“Time to hit the road. Rocky’s been trying to get a hold of you.
